The Social Security Administration recently announced that local district offices will have expanded hours of operation open to the public. Beginning March 16, 2015, local district offices will expand their hours of operation from the current schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - to 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on each of these days while continuing to close to the public at noon each Wednesday.
When announcing the expanded hours, Acting Commisioner Carolyn Colvin noted that "[the expansion of hours] reaffirms our commitment to providing the people that we serve the option of top notch face-to-face service . . . ".
We applaud the Social Security Administration for expanding the hours that local district offices are open to the public. However, this is not enough. It is essential that Congress act and takes the necessary steps to ensure that the disability programs remain funded. Congress should also restore funding to the Social Security Administration to help reduce the workload of staff members - workloads made greater by budget cuts in recent years.
